Tulak Hord, known as the Lord of Hate and Master of the Gathering Darkness, was a Dark Lord of the Sith that ruled during the early Sith Empire, commanding great armies and possessing a mastery of the dark side of the Force and lightsaber combat which left him nearly unrivaled. During battle, Hord wore a black mask, making him a fear-inspiring sight.

Tulak Hord’s placement in the timeline was originally a point of some confusion. In Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, Kreia explains that Hord was a master of lightsaber combat and a Sith Lord of the original Sith Empire, but The New Essential Chronology stated that modern lightsabers did not develop until after the Great Hyperspace War, which saw the Sith Empire’s collapse. However, later sources, such as the Star Wars: Lost Tribe of the Sith series, established that the Sith Empire developed lightsaber technology independently, and the video game Star Wars: The Old Republic and its associated materials greatly expanded on Hord, definitively placing him as a Dark Lord of the Sith prior to Marka Ragnos.
