BD units were companion droids designed to assist with operations in remote and dangerous locations across the galaxy; programmed to be the ideal assistant to researchers or explorers operating alone in the field, they were designed to traverse all types of terrain. As a result of their manufacturer collapsing, BD units were a relatively rare sight in the galaxy.

One such droid was BD-1, who accompanied Jedi MasterEno Cordova, and later the Jedi Padawan Cal Kestis in 14 BBY. Another BD unit was TA-418, who assisted DoctorEustacia Okka, former professor at the Shadow University institution, during the Imperial Era. Another BD unit was under the ownership of Peli Motto around 9 ABY.
