It was revealed in the pre-release to the last Jedi that Snoke could potentially be more powerful and learned in the dark side of the force than the Sith lord Darth Sidious and thanks to the novelization for the last Jedi we discovered exactly why this is and how Palpatine himslef wanted to learn from the same source of knowledge as Snoke did.
