The Gungan world primarily refers to the underwater domains of the Gungans on the planet Naboo in the Star Wars universe. Concept and Design Origins
The name "Utapau" dates back to George Lucas's early drafts of the original Star Wars in the 1970s (it was once considered for Tatooine or Naboo before being repurposed). The sinkhole planet concept drew from Ralph McQuarrie's 1976 artwork envisioning a similar world, later revived for the prequels.

Early Utapau inhabitant designs explored lemur-like, hairy creatures to match a "fragile" world, but these were scrapped. Artist Lee Sang-jun adapted a Mustafar religious society concept into the tall, pale Pau'ans in purple robes. Erik Tiemens created key concept art in 2002–2003, including vast caverns for the Grievous chase.

Filming and Effects:

Practical elements: Ewan McGregor performed scenes on physical sets, including a mechanical saddle on a hydraulic rig for riding the varactyl (Boga), later replaced with CGI. A Komodo dragon inspired Boga's animation.

Miniatures: A detailed miniature set depicted the sinkhole cities and landscapes.
CGI dominance: ILM handled the expansive environments, sinkholes, and crowds using digital mattes and previs (pre-visualization). Steven Spielberg guest-directed some Utapau chase previs.
Actors: Bruce Spence wore practical makeup as Port Administrator Tion Medon (initially debated as full CGI vs. practical).
