When questioned by the galaxy’s scholar’s, droids claimed that “The Maker” was the being who created the first ever sentient droid. He was the father-like figure who changed droids from simple, mindless machines, into the intelligent and sentient beings that most droids are by the time of the Clone Wars. A small group of researchers into droid matters also held the belief that “The Maker” may not have actually been the person to bring droids to sentience, but instead, the first sentient droid himself.
This is still hotly debated across the galaxy by the time of the Empire, with no droid historians being able to come to a firm conclusion. These same scholars also found it weird that every single new droid somehow had a knowledge of the maker as soon as they were created, leading to countless debates and arguments over how this was possible. After decades of squabbling and fighting, the scholars eventually came to two possible conclusions. The first is that all new droids were immediately told by older droids about the maker and what he represented, creating a chain of knowledge… And the second is that droid manufacturers were secretly including knowledge of the maker into the programming of all droid units, to make them easier to control and serve.
