Sometime during the Clone Wars, a group of battle droids, protocol droids, servant droids and almost any other droid variant you can think of, came together in the depths of Coruscant’s underworld to form a rebel group which fought for droid rights and droid freedom from their owners. This group had a faction of highly lethal, repurposed battle droids from the war and were willing to fight for their freedom… So, lets find out how the Droid Gotra operated and why they will almost definitely appear in Star Wars: The Batch.
The droid gotra at its core was a group of rebels made up nearly entirely of Droids, who wanted to expand the rights of their own kind across the galaxy. You may not have heard of the Droid Gotra up until now since they’ve primarily been featured in the books, like Tarkin and the comics, but some of you may have noticed that they were most recently mentioned in The Mandalorian Season 2, by Gor Koresh. The crime lord was being interrogated by Mando and ended up directing him to Tatooine, where he swore on the Droid Gotra that his information was legitimate. Bit of a weird thing to swear on, but since Dave Filloni is heavily involved in the Mandalorian and is Jon Favreau’s go-to guy for lore related tie ins, I’d say it’s at the front of their minds. That is our first connection to the Bad Batch, Dave filloni probably slipped that little reference in there as a nice connection when they inevitable feature in the Bad Batch, fighting for droid rights. That way, we can all point back and say “oh look there’s the Gotra that Gor Keresh Mentioned”.
The droid gotra weren’t all good however. Their main headquarters had them confined to a rugged and worn out industrial complex, located deep in the dark underbelly of Coruscant’s lower levels. At their base was stationed an elite group of highly trained, battle droids that were captured or malfunctioned during the Clone War.
