The Mandalorian Season 3 returns to Disney+ in 2022, with filming set to begin in April of this year according to Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni. Before then, we can expect the Book of Boba Fett and Star Wars: The Bad Batch which will come out on Star Wars Day, May the Fourth (be with you).
In this Star Wars news update, we take a look at big news for the upcoming third season of the live-action Star Wars, Lucasfilm and Disney Plus series The Mandalorian – A new female lead character will replace Cara Dune after Gina Carano was fired by Disney and Kathleen Kennedy. We don’t have any details as to who the character is but it is believed she will be an ally to Mando (Pedro Pascal – Din Djarin) and join our heroes Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen), Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff), Greef Karga (Carl Weathers), Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison), Koska Reeves (Sasha Banks) and Grogu (Baby Yoda). It was confirmed that Cara Dune would not be re-cast and now we know, they’ve decided to add a new character to the line-up. No details are yet known about the Mandalorian Season 3 but it’s believed to be released in February of next year right after The Book of Boba Fett and Star Wars: Visions stop airing.
We also talk about Daisy Ridley who says she’d be willing to return to a future Star Wars project as Rey Skywalker at some point. We discuss Rey’s yellow lightsaber in the final scene of Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker. Did Rey Skywalker use the yellow kyber crystal from Luke Skywalker’s second lightsaber that he got on Tempes after defeating Darth Vader’s Sith Inquisitor on Tempes before he created his green lightsaber in Return of the Jedi that we also saw in the the Mandalorian Season 2 finale – Chapter 16 «The Rescue».
Finally, we discuss the Obi-Wan Kenobi series because Ewan McGregor has been working out to get in shape for the role of Master Kenobi in the show which takes place 10 years after Revenge of the Sith during his isolation and exile on Tatooine. We’ll see Hayden Christensen reprise the role of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader and Liam Neeson as Qui-Gon Jinn.
It has been a quiet time for Star Wars and a bit of a rough time for Lucasfilm due to the backlash they received for firing Gina Carano but Star Wars is alive and well and The Bad Batch is the next upcoming Star Wars show coming on May 4th – Star Wars day. The series follows the elite and experimental clones of the Bad Batch (first introduced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 7) as they find their way in a rapidly changing galaxy in the immediate aftermath of the Clone War. The show will even feature Ming-Na Wen’s Fennec Shand who will also appear in the Book of Boba Fett in December 2021. The Bad Batch is one of the many series announced by Kathleen Kennedy at Disney Investor Day 2020 as well as Star Wars: Ahsoka, Rangers of the New Republic, Lando, Cassian Andor and the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. George Lucas might be writing two episodes for Andor although this is not confirmed and is just a rumor for now.
